Eric,
Maybe you should just "bite the bullet" and buy a new solenoid?  Then
you'd know for sure what you were missing.  Or perhaps this can be an
excuse for you to upgrade to one of those high-torque replacement
starters?  (I'm always looking for an excuse to upgrade...)  Anyway,
just a thought.

And this is what I have been fearing all along because it SHOULD be
obvious!

Maybe someone has a photo of one of these out of the car - sitting on
the bench or whatever.

I have had so many nasty little niggles like this with both of my cars
recently that I am almost assuming this is going to be the case.
