The main bearings can be replaced with the engine in the car, generally 
quicker than to R&R the engine if that's all your doing.  You have to 
remove the bottom two bellhousing bolts to drop the oil pan.  You also have 
to remove the bottom two timing cover bolts, because they screw into the 
front main bering cap.  A large pry bar and a bit of creativity are also 
handy, especially for removing the front main cap which is over the 
crossmember.
