Your 800mA is correct, have you verified this is being drawn when in the
car? The easiest way to do this is by locating where the yellow in the main
loom joins the yellow or yellow/red in the gearbox loom (up to 77 model
year) by the mass of connectors by the fusebox, part that 2-way connector,
insert the ammeter, turn on the ignition, and select OD and an OD gear. On
77 model year and later it is whites and brown/whites in both looms and a
4-way connector.
If not then check you have 12v at that connector, via the manual switch if a
pre-77, via the inertia switch for 77 and later but that also feeds the fuel
pump so should be obvious if that is missing. If 12v is there then you will
have to check both sides of the lock-out switch on the gearbox, and also
both sides of the manual switch on a 77 and later. The lock-out switch is
tricky to get to, undoing the rear cross-member from the chassis rails and
lowering it on a jack, and removing the centre arm rest, pulling the carpet
back, and removing the access plate makes things significantly easier.
