Dan, try removing your air filters and see what happens. I had an issue =
on an old mini a few months which would not run right at all. It had a =
high flow K&N air filter on it which was basically blocked. The engine =
was effectively running too rich due to the lack of air.
The owner of the mini then confessed that he had never cleaned the =
filter in the time he had the car. Some 15 years perhaps.
When you removed the vacuum pipe and the engine ran better you would =
have leaned out the mixture by introducing air at the manifold.

Ok, tried removing the brake booster vacuum hose with no change.....
I removed it at the manifold end as it was a lot easier to get to - =
plugged the port there. Car ran the same when started, however revs =
increased noticeably when I removed the
plug while the car was running. Still ran roughly but not quite as badly =
and with increased vigor, it seemed to me. And the hose was completely =
dry as far up as I could reach with
a swab. I then hooked it up, ran the car again, and then checked inside =
the hose again - still dry.....
I'll worry about the brake fluid loss once I get the car up and running =
again.... Didn't seem like the reservoir was any lower today after =
running the car a bit yesterday....
Any thoughts on what to check next?
