If you are not already a member, join the MSCC and ask where your local
group meet, talk to a few of them and beg lifts in their cars, to see
what works for them. Make sure that you really want a Morgan and can
live with the car and the attention- a lot of new ones sold to "virgin"
owners hit the market very quickly when the owner decides that it does
not suit their lifestyle.
Having a car "bespoked" is probably more personal than a suit and my
trip to the top of the list hasn't occured yet, (1999!), but I do 10000
miles a year in my shiney rebuilt 4/4, so I claim some experience.
Essential- galvanised chassis, scuttle roll bar, steel wings
Reasoning- stops chassis rot completely, intrusion protection/something
more solid to hang the doors, less prone to star dents from stones or
minor denting as the Ally wings are soft- ally wings still oxidise, they
are edged by rolling around a steel wire core which will oxidise
eletrolytically. The repair shop fitters suggest steel wings for a
workhorse, (I've got GRP wings, not a factory option!).
The others are for me a matter of taste, I don't have door handles and
do not find it much of an inconvenience- I'm told there is a security
advantage, but it can only be minor. Don't bother with a radio unless
you will spend a lot of time in traffic, radios in open cars annoy
passers-by if you want to hear it! (they get nicked too!). A tow bar is
quite a useful accessory, it defends the back of your car from charging
Sierras and allows the use of a trailer for excess baggage.
Have fun, I think all Morgan owners like to help other people spend
money on their dream car!
