A number of years ago my +4 front crossmember broke on a trip to one of the
MOGs in Luray, Va. Turned out before I'd owned it at some time the lower
tube had been bent so it was sleeved (6" long hollow 1" tube), braized (so
far not bad), then the braize was sanded smooth (BAD) and painted over.
Fortunately this occurred within 50 yards of a truckers' welding shop. The
welders made some comments about what a great hood ornament the 4 place would
make for their Kenworths, rebraized the crossmember and sent us on our way.
THe rest of the trip was completed without fanfare, but once home, a pal and
I removed the sleeve, straightened the tubes, and slid one inch cold rolled
stock inside the crossmembers then tacked the ends. OK, so my car's
distribution isn't 50/50 any more, but I've no worries about the tubes!
..and my 18 year old son took 2nd at the Mog 30 auto-x in his first-ever
competitive event so the weight addition can't be all that bad (though JHS II
will more than likely disagree!! :-)
That was over twenty years ago and she still rolls along fine!
