Erich,
I think the original wood was southern yellow pine ,its a very hard and
durable softwood with good rot resistance as well. This is available
locally.. Bristol Valley Hardwoods should have it.
I used quarter sawn white oak for my bed ...caution ...much more $ and
heavier. I dyed the wood black so you can still see the grain ..looks Ebony
like. After a poor experience with a couple of spar varnish brands ..to
soft, ran all over etc. I sanded most of it off and applied the Pelucid
Product with a brush, one coat. I am pleased with the results. Not sure how
many coats to get the same gloss over bare wood or how well it would spray.
