It seems to me that at one time it was against the law to exit a vehicle
from the drivers side. Too many people opened them in front of passing
or on coming traffic and lost their doors, not to mention causing damage
and injury to the other vehicle and driver. With the newer vihicles
having center consoles it made it much harder to enter from the
passenger side. The law was simply ignored, forgotten or recinded.
Thats the way I remember it.

It appears to me (in pictures and in my own experience that 1951 Chevy
trucks (and perhaps other years as well) have a door lock on the exterior of
the passenger door, but not on the driver side. Is that correct? And if
so, why?
