|  The biggest reason to change over is efficiency...the alternator charges at 
much lower RPMs than a Generator does. For highway driving, a generator is 
fine, but stop and go will allow a battery to weaken it's charge, as the 
generator can't put out as much juice, since it uses relatively weak 
permanent magnets compared to a strong electromagnetic field. If you intend 
to do alot of stop and go, idle in traffic driving, then a switch would be 
warranted. And , Classic Chevy Club of Florida has a late fifties generator 
conversion, meaning they build an alternator into your generator 
housing...looks stock, but operates modern. Can't beat that!
