I don't know about the dimensions for the bed in your '54, but I'm in the
process of re-flooring the bed in my '50 3600 right now.  My wife is the
woodworker, so we have all the tools, jointer, planer etc.  I did some
research on the different types of wood, and decided to use kerewing.  It's
resistant to everything, and is used as a floor in semi-trailers and flat
cars.  So far we have planed about half of our boards to the desired
thickness, and when I get the truck back from the paint shop later this
week, we'll cut to fit, and start drilling holes and doing the rabbet work.
It has a really attractive grain, and will look good with the stainless
steel strips.
