Mike, I've got an AD (I see you have a '56), but I started welding mine. But
with a lot of holes to
plug, you may end up with quite a bit of sheet metal distortion. I ended up
cutting a cardboard
template and used that to cut out a piece of .045" steel and welded that over
the existing firewall
to smooth it all out. It will still take a skim coat of body filler to get it
all nice and smooth.
I'm not the best body guy in the world, and I've been working on mine for a
couple weeks, trying to
get it just right. If you try and bondo up the holes, any future flexing may
crack the filler,
welding is definitely better. Cut some plugs out of sheet metal and patch them
in, grind, then use
filler to smooth it all out.

the next couple
days.
