I do not write often, but I feel I must pass this on. The other day, I was
using a MIG welder to replace some of the floor in my 50 1/2 ton. I have
always heard that you should disconnect the battery before welding. I always
thought that was just to protect the diodes in the alternator. Needless to
say, I did not have the battery disconnected and even worse, I had the
battery cover off while welding the floor. About the time my wife came
out to see how I was doing, one of the battery caps blew off and hit me
in the chest. It made a loud pop and scared the wife and me. No real
damage, but I did remove the battery before welding any more of the
floor. I wanted to pass this on to possibly save anyone from getting an
acid bath. It appears an arc welder really can cause a battery to explode.
