You got ripped off, pure and simple. He (and his shop) should be held
responsible for all parts and labor to repair your truck, with the parts you
originally paid for.

I don't know the specifics, but if it were as easy as  putting in a new ring
and pinion from a later truck, everyone would be doing it. I would give
Patrick Dykes a call and he will be able to tell you exactly why the later
parts won't work.
