The only time you should be downshifting to reduce speed is when entering a
turn where you are going to be accelerating immediately.  A technique
usually used in sports cars or somthing a bit better handling than most of
our oletrucks.

Brakes are a lot cheaper than transmissions, and it's a lot easier to change
a set of pads or shoes than a clutch.

I would rather use the brakes, which were designed for slowing, than a
transmission which was designed for converting power.
