Regarding the 46 rear fenders I was working on a few months ago, I just faked
the reinforcements, wherever they would fit. Apparently, the truck had
collision damage and replacement fenders, with different bracketing on either
side. So I just put back in whatever fit. Yes, it is a cop out, but it
worked, and since the truck was the owner's grandfather's, the owner would be
satisfied that I restored it authentically to the way gramps drove it.
Next I put in a repro grille from Carter's, which fit poorly. It took a
whole mess of cussin' to get it in, and there are still some gaps to the
front fenders. The original grilles are made of one piece, stamaped into
bars, but the repro is made of individual bars all welded together. The
perimeter piece is vastly different from stock. the original grille might
have been repairable; but it was rough. My thoughts are to restore the
original parts preferentially to replacing with new.
