If you are going for a 'true' restoration (want to keep the original bumper 
look), one alternative could be to purchase and install trailer hitches with 
"hideaway" receivers, then purchase any number of step units that slide into 
the receiver and can be easily removed when not in use.  You would also have 
the added benefit of a hitch should you decide to pull a trailer at a later 
date.  Just a suggestion you may want to consider.
