Hello,

a couple of thought (and questions) come to mind.

first of all, a nearly discharge battery cell can change
polarity. it's a chemical thing that occurs in the cell from
being discharged to low. sometimes it happens, sometimes it
doesn't. when it does, it's junk I think.

His truck doesn't have a positive ground? mine does and it
has caused me more than one headache. with positive ground,
you have to polarize the voltage regulator. you also have to
be careful when jumping it or when adding electrical
accessories.

how old is the battery?

of course I would recommend the common things like verify
charge voltage and polarity, starter current.

One problem many guys have with 6V trucks, is that they use
12V cables, which are much smaller in diameter. you'r local
parts store won't carry the larger cables that a 6V system
needs to start your engine properly. you get voltage drop
across the cable, the starter then turns hard and slow.

Before getting a new battery for this, I wouild definitely
have the generator and starter checked.

a bad starter that overloads the battery could definitely
produce that reversed cel problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but I think a battery is junk
after a cell reversal. I have never heard of a way to bring
it back.

Best of luck to you and your friend.

Brian
