The'47 pickups and all AD panels and suburbans had the tank located
there. There are aftermarket replacements but they are pricey ($400?).
Your best bet would be to find a donor truck with a good tank, then you
could get the original beackets and straps also. It would have to be a
1/2 panel or 'burb though as the 1 tons had bigger tanks and would be
too long.
As far as late models I was looking at Chevy S-10s before I broke down
and paid the money to have one made up out of aluminum locally. you
might look at that or a s10 blazer.
