My dad owned a 250 6 in a 67 3/4 ton Sub with granny low 4 speed 
when I was in high school.  It would pull or haul anything a 3/4 
ton pickup would.  With the 6, you just won't do much freeway cruising 
at the speed limit.

With a half ton, I would look a little closer at things like the 
rear end ratio.  As far as 3 speed vs 4 speed we hardly ever used 
granny low anyways, mainly for creeping along trails looking for 
partridge.

BTW, the 67 3/4 ton had coil rear springs.  So did a friend's 70 
3/4 ton.  By 73, they went back to leaf springs.
