I'm not realy experienced with new american trucks but there are several
general ways to check it with all cars.

- termostat not closing, thus permantly cooling: Take out the termostat and
dunk it in boiling water. termostat functioning should be visible.
- Low coolant-level: If temperature pickup is not submerged in liquid it
will indicate the air-temp instead of the watertemp on the temp-gauge. It
looks like engine is cold, but in fact it could be red-hot. If you also have
an oiltemp gauge, tis should read "hot" if coolant is too low, whilst the
watertemp-gauge reads "cold".
- pump not working: This can be checked by comparing the "squeezeability" of
the coolant-tubing with engine off, and engine running.
If the engine is running one of the tubes should be harder to squeeze.
