All these web sites on switching the 3/4 ton to 4.11 gears formed the
question; when did 3/4 ton trucks go to an open drive shaft? Was it before
the 1/2 ton?

Bob, Carl ~

I put tube shocks on the front of my 1949 Chevy pickup using a kit from
Pickups Northwest www.pickupsnw.com It is a complete bolt-on kit with
upper and lower mounts. Very easy install. However I am still looking
for a kit for the 3/4 ton rear tube shocks. For instructions on
installing 4.10 gears in place of your stock 4.57 gears check out my
site at:

If your 1949 GMC has the original GMC 228 engine I think that you can
put a 302 block in without much modification. The '49 GMC radiator sits
farther forward than a Chevy with a 216.
