On my '57, the adjustable screw ("stop") is on the spindle and moves. The
"lump" I am talking about is cast on both sides of the axle and is the point
that the screw hits.

Sure looks that way and GM just took care of the caster with a shim. I'll look
under my '54 in the morning to see if it has a tapped hole front and rear.

I had my '54 apart recently and there is a stop on the backside to keep the
spindle from turning too far. Does your '56 have this stop?
The actual stop is a little bent plate angle with a bolt fastening it to the
axle. If the stop is missing perhaps the threaded hole is still there and it
faces the rear.
