I agree, and think your experience is pretty normal - a 45 weber is TONs
better for potential power than a STOCK pair of SU HS2's, and the Weber has
accelerator pumps, which make a big difference in responsiveness in street
driving.  You could get far better gas mileage, possibly, by trying to go to
the smallest idle and pump jets that work at all, cause that's where the
engine in a street car spends most of it's time.  While I've never run a
Weber on a street Midget, I did on a Mini and an MGB, and was able to get
the same gas mileage as on the stock set up, or the HS6 single route.

The thing about making tons o'power on HS2's comes from SCCA H-production
racing where SU's are the only carbs allowed, hence people spend a lot of
time getting them to run right.  I'd estimate that it would cost between
$1,000 and $2,000 extra to  get SU's to do better than Webers on a race
motor, so we're really talking "you gotta wanna" here!

And Webers still sound way cool...
