Yes, for a while, it was quite common to adapt wire wheel half shafts.
It involved some machining (remove the spline at the end). From what
others have told me, this was more out of necessity rather than choice
- supplies of the high strength units had dried up and the modern
specialist manufacturers hadn't started making them yet.

There were factory high strength half shafts, and the 'Dufor' half
shafts (I don't know for sure but the factory ones and the Dufors may
be the same thing). I have a set of Dufors on one of my sprites, but
for serious use (racecar and redcar) I use the modern manufactured
high-strength units. They still do break, but pretty rarely. I haven't had
one fail for the last 5 years and I give them a heap of stick in the
racecar (drop the clutch at 5,000 at race starts).
