I can relate to your experience.

My fun on a late Friday/Saturday night in the Dallas suburb I was living in
was to teach the young kids who had Daddy's new Mustang GTs that there's
more to driving than just putting the right foot down.  I had the 0-45mph
run figured out well enough to leave them all behind.  One young chap in a
mid-70s Camaro actually bothered to cruise around my apartment parking lot
looking for me after losing out three times in a row.

My car?  1990 Honda Civic Si.  On the crappy stock tires.

Yes, the average driver thinks that being in a fast car makes them fast.
