Thanks to a list member's prodding about how my circuit is closed I went
back to the timing light and got it working.  I definitely do not have the
kind that clamps onto the spark plug wire without pulling it off.  What I
forgot to do before clipping the lead to the spark plug was put the little
wire adapter on so I could plug both the light and the spark wire onto the
plug.  Duh!  

Adapter was too big for my spark plug but a pair of pliers fixed that
<mash>.  I'll have to read up on what RPM I am supposed to test at, but if
I'm anywhere close on that one, seems like I'm quite a bit too far advanced
after trying to do it by ear yesterday.

A chore for Wednesday as tomorrow I have tickets to Savage Garden in NYC.

Thanks for the help on the timing light.  That's one issue solved.
