I've not seen one used for automotive paint, but I can testify to the
accuracy of one used for matching colors in house paint -- from a piece
of tree bark.
My father spent his spare time last summer building one of the nicest
tree stands for deer hunting I've ever seen. 6'W x 8'L x 6.5'H, modular
construction, weather-proofed, insulated, sliding windows on all four
sides (two with swing down gun rests, a urinal hooked to an outside
drainage pit, and provisions for a propane fired heater/stove (we're
working on the cable tv hook-up, wet bar, and internet access.... <G>).
It's mounted 15' up in a nice old oak tree near some of the finest
white-tail trails in the Midwest. Best thing is that Dad built it using
pretty much all scrap lumber, leftover material, or things people were
throwing away. Total cash outlay was about $150.
Before it was loaded into the truck, hauled into the tree, and installed,
we took a bark sample up the local paint store and had them match and mix
some paint. Perfect match. Of course, we had to add some striping and
irregular patterns to break up the outline and flat surfaces to further
camouflage the thing, but it worked pretty well.
As to obligatory LBC content, I suppose I could strap one of this year's
kills to the luggage rack on Miss Molly the Midget to bring it home.
Wouldn't that be a heckuva sight?
