There was a recent discussion on this list about this.  I may have even
been the one who brought it up.  Some posts in the discussion almost have
me convinced that it is an urban Spridget myth...

If you have the original gauge, it is mechanical, not electric.
You could test it with a pot of boiling water (212F).
