I have several parts cars that appear to have been converted from mechanical
to electric fuel pumps, and every one of them has the electric one mounted
on the inside left fender well.  It doesn't really matter how far away from
the tank the fuel pump is, and mounting it on the left fender well puts it
close for attaching to the fuel line from the tank and to the carbs.  It's
also easy to work on in this position.  (I'd agree, though, that sticking
with trying to fix the mechanical fuel pump is still the best bet.)
