Day 3... success at last!

I'm happy to report that today, besides being a delightfully warm sunny
day, I succeeded in getting the '75 Midget running with only a couple minor
obstacles.

The problem with the fuel pump turned out to be twofold. One was that the
diaphram was "glued in place from having sat too long. The few drops of gas
I dribbled into the strainer yesterday, combined with a little gentle
urging through the three strainer holes set it free again. The second was
that someone used some silicon rubber as a gasket cement for thr rubber
seal onside the cover. I think that was allowing air in (and gas out).
After I removed all the silicon from the seal, it sealed just fine. Now
that fuel is flowing to the carb, I'm seeing a big puddle begin to develop
on the ground. I discovered that there is a plug in the base of the float
bowl with a dried up "O"-ring. A trip to my neighborhood plumbing supply
and twenty cents cured that in a jiffy! After that the engine fires right
up and seems to run very good. No unusual noises and no smoke... not even
any leaks. I haven't been able to test drive it yet since the pedal box and
new master cylinder need to be installed, but so far so good.

The one thing I haven't been able to figure out is where the 1/4 or 3/8
inch vacuum connection on bottom-manifold side of the carb goes. This is a
brass pipe that is angle down and toward the front of the car. Is that a
purge line? For now I just capped it, but if anyone knows please tell me. I
can't seem to find any reference to it in the manuals.

Thanks again to everyone for their help getting me through this.

Gerard
