about a *possibility* of damage to catalytic converter under "certain

JL: I use 87 octane in my '79 1500 here in the low mountains of Tennessee,
and it runs just fine. I don't think I would go as low as 85. Of course, my
car has been detoxed, which answers the 2nd question too.
