I have done a little different version of this in Iowa and it worked. 
Call the clerk of court, and ask if you can make payments.  Pay $5 every
month, sometimes skipping a month every once in a while.  How I know
this works is as soon as I sent in the final payment I got sent a notice
that I had to attend driving school (3 tickets >10 over in a year).  So,
if you were close to the year, just stretch the payments out.  Will have
to try the other version with my next rapid transit award.
