I tried tightening up the adjusters and pulling the hand brake using
some cable an a large turnbuckle.  No dice for me, I still could not
get the pinion nut off.  I even tried to bolt a piece of metal to the
flange in an attempt to hold it in place.  That also failed.
The real solution is to use an impact wrench.  

I put the whole mess in the trunk and drove it to the corner gas
station.  The guy there buzzed the nut off in about 2 seconds.  I put
it back on the same way.  I have since bought an air compressor so
look out.
