I am lapsed (from a long while back) member of many clubs. In most cases I
found that the people that went down the pub knew almost nothing about their
car other than what wax polish worked the best. Nor were they really
interested in finding out much more about their car. Those that had a little
technical knowledge were often convinced they knew so much they never need
listen to anyone else.

People that raced Spridgets NEVER, EVER went to the pub to talk about cars.
Some of the club magazines were ok but often biased to their advertisers (I
suppose I can forgive them for that) and had some features that I did not
consider were accurate or useful - same goes for a lot, but not all you can
buy at any high street newsagent.

So, given that I get my cheap insurance from an independant source I decided
I would be better off spending my membership subscription on something else -
like decent books or tools.

Obviously your mileage may vary, mine didn't and I didn't give up after the
first club, year. I guess the newer you are to ownership the more there is
learn. Sadly, clubs and their members seem on occasion, less than keen to
learn.

Having said all that this Spridgets list and to a lesser extent the MG BBS
has been a far better experience and one that I really enjoy. The best car
meet I ever went to was the Sprite Rush 98 and I am looking forward to the
meet in 2003. I really liked Carlisle Imports too. I try to get to the
racetrack as a spectator once a year and this year re-discovered the
excitement of a British hill Climb meet at Prescott despite the route their
being riddled with speed cameras.
