The twist lock feature would be less prone to wear out if it is
released before it is pushed back in. If they are properly installed
they only need to be released and they go back on thier own without
needing to be pushed. Everyone should know that they do fray  and that
they need lube too.

I don't know how original you want to keep it, but check out a diesel
eqipment supplier...heavy diesel trucks use a generic throttle lock
that
works the same way...pull the knob, twist it, and it locks wherever
you have
pulled it to.  The generic aspect should make this more economical
that a
Moss "original".
