MmHm, an amusing thread, with plenty of idiotic claims. Locking all the wheels
up
and fooling the abs, using a wedge of snow to stop the car, etc. It's only the
auto
folks that castigate ABS. The aircraft field has had them and loved them for
decades, because they work. Motorcycle field has loved them as well. So has
the
trucking industry. Even the rail roads have picked them up.
Most dramatic demonstrations I've seen of the phenominal superiority of ABS was
done
by BMW with their motorcycles by a writer for the old Rider magazine. The test
track was oil and water slicked cobble stone. The bike was equipped with
outriggers, for a reason, as the tester discovered. He brought the bike to a
sluggish stop on the cobblestone section of the track, and then fell over. The
surface was so slick he not only couldn't get the bike moving again, he couldn't
stay upright himself, and crawled off the track.
The only instance that ABS may perform marginally substandard is when compared
against a perfectly balanced brake system, being operated by a extremely
proficient
driver, under non-startle conditions, on dry pavement, in a straight line.
Under
all other conditions, the ABS is superior, without exception.
