I think that's almost an oxymoron, and I have a 1500.  Whilst I don't have 
any direct experience with the 1275 (other than looking and longing), I have 
always understood that the 1275 is the engine of choice for performance 
upgrades, and you will find quite a bit more aftermarket parts for it.  It 
tends to be a crisper engine than the 1500.  The 1500 came from the era of 
exhaust emission controls and CAFE regulations.

I would suggest that you desmog it, replace the carb (if you still have the 
ZS) with twin SUs or a single Weber DCOE, and go for a hotter cam.  Header 
and exhaust mods will certainly help.  But you probably know all that anyway.

As far as a book, you might look into some TR Spitfire books as well as 
Midget books.  It is the same engine as the Spitfire 1500.
