But doesn't this just mean that there is less contact area at the hub end 
instead of the diff?

If that's the case, what's gained?

The cure for this is to punch out the welch plug inside the splined hub, then 
pressing the exposed axle end the 3/8" in the direction of the banjo.  This 
puts a little more surface area of the splined axle end inside the diff to 
help prevent snapping of the axle.  Don't forget to put in a new welch plug, 
or in a pinch appropriate sized rubber balls.  Otherwise, your nice clean 
diff lube ends up dripping over your nice clean brake shoes.
