"I feel your pain." :-( I put a set of Goodrich TA VR4s on my
Mustang 5.0 and they were one of the worst tires I've ever used for
exactly the reason you mentioned.
Michelin is what I consider the best all-around tire. Not the
stickiest, not the absolute longest lasting, but just all-around -good-.
If you're not looking for some special attribute that's what I'd
recommend. I'm sure there are other good choices too, I just don't
know what they are for sure. I like Goodyear on my truck.
Go to Tire Rack's web site and look around. Lots of choices and
they have customer reviews on -many- brands and models. Very helpful
website!

Yes 155/80 is equivalent to '155'. (Within a hair's difference
anyway. :-) )
When changing tire sizes and aspect ratios the "rule of thumb" for
keeping tire diameter the same is to add 20mm width for every
10% -reduction- in aspect ratio.
i.e. 145/80x13 = 165/70 = 185/60 = 205/50 etc. All will have similar
diameters but with very different widths. Note that different brands,
and even models within the same brand will vary to some extent. Tire
sizes are nominal measurements. Most manufacturers web sites also
list actual diameters.
