although a pretty common practice , one must be carefull with this process!!
reason being that a too high cold pressure is a very-very bad thing! but
even worse is too high of a hot constant pressure after warming up!!!
why is this a bad thing? we all want "good" oil pressure , it's the life
blood of a 4 stroke engine! but too high of a pressure cold without
cautious warming up prior to going off for a drive can lead to premature
engine failure! yes! failure! excessive pressure can lead to what is
best termed as "washing out " of the bearing material. the bearing material
is a very soft material. so soft that if you wanted to you could scratch it
out with a finger nail. the rods, crank and cam are intended to ride on a
film of oil between the bearing and the rotating components. if excess
pressure exists and the relief pressure valve does not allow it to safely
bleed off that excess pressure then the oil has to go somewhere. that
somewhere is it tries to get out where ever it can in it's normal path where
it does it's job lubricating parts. the soft bearing material can actually
be pressure washed out of it's bearing shells over a short time and a spun
bearing is the end result.
you might ask what is too much pressure? evry motor that is used has so
many variable tolerances that i can not give a figure on that question. on
new motors as well , due to not knowing the specific tolerances wich were
ended up with upon assembly. you must be reasonable when trying to
determine what is too much pressure. the shimming of the spring trick
works if you have a very - very worn spring and it could use a tad more
pressure on the valve to regain a reasonable pressure. but if you have
decent pressure and are seeking "more pressure" (ok tim allen fans grunt
along with me...."more power"...lol!) be very carefull ! you could be
terminating your bay's life early in your search for more when you already
had enough......

just thought i'd share the other side of high oil pressure for those who
might be unaware. :)
