My vote would go to a very small leak in the cooling system. A small leak
will not allow coolant to leak out in adequate quantities to notice, but
will suck air back in rather than pulling coolant from the overflow. If your
engine and cooling system are up to it, you might cure this with one of the
commercial stop-leak products (the technologies on these has improved rather
dramatically in the last 10 years or so). Use with caution and read the
labels carefully before putting your money down.
