There are actually 2 obvious options of the problem.
Yes the one is the broken axle.
the second is a tooth-sheared pinion.
either way the work can be done with the axle/rear end housing in place.
but both will require the axles and diff. to come out, and a good internal
cleaning either way. 
i have never broken either, but ive twisted the HECK out of a set of stock
axles.. very scarry. i now use the comp. axles. 
if you DO use stock axles again, do NOT switch sides from the car they came
from. 
this will put a reverse twist into them that will make them faulter even
faster.
