Robert,

Old and "resistive" or new and "restive" battery cables will burn up without
a lot of current draw, the key word is "resistive".  You may have had the
equivalent of only a few strands of that cable trying to carry the load, it
this case the cable will burn up one strand at a time.  A bad connection to
the battery or chassis would cause the same thing.  It probably was burned
when you started the car and died at the light.  Replace it, clean up the
connections to the battery and the chassis and see what it does.  Stand back
though!
