Jon,
The rail yard I work at presently is 2 blocks downwind from Baker
Commodities. It is a rendering plant on Bandini Blvd with several other type
businesses. When the wind is going the right way, the whole rail yard smells
like dead rotting animal carcasses. Luckily I just get on a eastbound freight
train and leave for Barstow within a few hours of arrival at work. I don't know
how the guys that work in the yard all day can stand it. Back in 1978 I had a
job designing and installing boilers. It just so happened I had to rewire one
of
our boilers at Baker Commodities. My first encounter with them. When I got
there my boss was quite amused by all my heaving and discomfort, but I had to
stay and rewire that boiler anyway. I never failed to be amazed by the workers
at Baker at lunch time. They would just sit down on the dock between 55 gallon
drums of animal parts and have there sandwich. I did not eat lunch for the week
I had to work there, or for a few days after. The first day I got to the rail
yard brought all of this back. I still shut off the vents and hold my breath
when I drive by Baker commodities.
