probably not connected to the motor any more.  it is a design feature on
many cars to preserve the mechanism.  plastic(nylon) socket with metal ball
popped into it.   if frozen or other obstruction they are to pop apart.
other design of older type for GM was a steel bal lin a steel socket that
has 2 nuts on fixed studs to hold ball on motor arm to linkage end.  studs
might have broken?  nuts might have loosened and just fell apart?   who
really knows the fate until it gets dissected?
