I've been using the stuff for several years, now, mainly on old Gravely
equipment and farm machinery and more for function then for cosmetic effect.
It really takes a beating very well, if applied correctly. I've also been
using it on suspension parts, which have needed to be removed and
reinstalled, for service. I usually (but, not always) apply it over a
sandblasted surface, after first removing all traces of grease/oil. I find
it to be much more convenient and cost-effective than powder coating. I
generally spray it on, which, for one thing, allows me to get a lot more
coverage per container than brush application would.
The '73 Midget, that my son and I are currently restoring, will get a lot of
POR-15 application on suspension components, as well as battery box, bumper
mounting brackets, master cylinder mounting bracket & cover plate, and
anything else on the car that was originally black. Sill panels (inner and
outer) will get a light sand blast, to remove the factory applied coating,
then a POR-15 application before installation. I do mask off the areas that
will be welded, and apply 3M Weld-Thru primer on those surfaces. POR-15
also sells a high-gloss black top coat that I may use on the outer sills, as
I don't care for the original, dull/low gloss black treatment. I used a
Dupont base coat-clear coat lacquer, on my '72's sills, however, and it has
held up unexpectedly well over the past 13 years.
Well, my new nozzles for my bead blast cabinet just arrived, so, I can put
The Kid to work!
Later.
