This position is located in: Wildlife Health Center and is represented by a
union. Working hours: Monday-Friday 8 am - 5 pm. 11/ 1/03 - 5/31/04.
This position begins November 1, 2003 and ends May 31, 2004.
This External position is for UCD/UCDHS employees and the general public.
Applications from the general public and UCD/UCDHS employees will be
considered simultaneously. This position supports ongoing puma research in
the Sierra Nevada Mountains in collaboration with the Department of Fish
and Game.
Responsibilities: Determine the extent of movements of mountain lion/puma on
the west slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Initiate puma capture
efforts (using highly trained hounds, snares, box traps or other means) in
remote, harsh environments, working independently and with other field
workers. Immobilize/anesthetize puma, take medical samples and attach, test
and start GPS collars. Make diagnosis and provide medical treatment for
injured or distressed animals. Provide co-leadership with planning and
implementing logistics of captures, including transportation to and from
field sites. Operate four-wheel drive vehicle through rough terrain to
field sites and camp in remote locations for extended periods. Monitor and
maintain weekly ground locations of puma's that are fitted with GPS collars
in remote locations. Communicate with CDFG Air Services to provide weekly
telemetry locations. Establish research strategies that optimize air and
ground locations. Assist with planning and implementing logistics of
fieldwork, coordinating logistics and employees. Recover GPS units after
they are programmed to fall off.
Requirements: Must possess significant experience with and knowledge of
methodologies and equipment for puma observation and behavior, tracking and
capture using highly trained hounds for locating and capturing mountain
lions. Skill and knowledge to diagnose and treat injured or distressed
puma. Skill to use advanced VHF radio telemetry and GPS equipment; hike
extended distances and conduct observations in extremely remote and rugged
conditions working independently. Ability to collect, organize, and
maintain accurate, up-to-date written daily research records during field
work. Experience reading topographic maps and map locations accurately.
Extensive knowledge of backcountry camping, travel and safety. Excellent
oral communication and interpersonal skills to deal with co-workers in harsh
conditions for extended periods of time. Skills in setting both snares and
box traps or other legal and viable methods of lion capture techniques.
Skills to use specialized equipment in the field, such as: chain saws,
come-along, handyman jack, and log chokers. Ability to skillfully drive a
four-wheel drive vehicle on extremely rugged terrain. Ability to coordinate
field operations and staff. Must be familiar with the geographic area
between Butte and Calaveras counties. Supplemental Application
Requirements: Supplemental requirements that must be provided by the final
filing date: Certification by California Department of Fish and Game in
mountain lion restraint. Physical Requirements: Must be able to hike in
remote rugged terrain carrying research and camping equipment. Advanced
tree climbing skills in order to handle anesthetized pumas."
