Speaking of which, I'm struggling along with doing bodywork for the first time.
I've smoothed out a couple of doors for a BGT with good results, but I'm
welding, pounding, and grinding to get as close as I can before a thin smear of
filler. If there's a better way, I'd like to know how to learn about it. I
see references to custom car guys using stuff mixed with fiberglass resin, but
no explanation of how to do it. I've seen references to lead and just welding
and grinding. Still would like to see a "how to" on the subject.

Anybody have good videos and/or books to recommend?

Body work done right even if you cant always do it yourself
send it out. Expalin the zero bondo factor.
Tell them you will prep and paint yourself.
99% of the time it's money well spent.
You can see first hand how the dent was repaired, by pulling
beating, heat or just removed and replaced sheet-metal.
Welds that have been grinded down and polished, work out alot
better in the long run than a dent filled with plastic that
cracks and bubbles later after you have spent time and money
 doing a nice paint job.
Cheaper to do it right the first time around.
 Ive learned the hard way.
