Frank,

The pull the trigger, gun type soldering irons work by putting a very large
electric current through the tip. For this to work it is very important
that the tip wires are clean where they go through the holes in the two
metal bars that come out of the body of the soldering gun, and that the
mounting nuts are tight. The current flows at a low voltage, so even a
slight electrical resitance will cut the current.

I once had a soldering gun that did not heat up well, and tightening the
nuts fixed it. May not be the problem, but worth a try.

And my crapsman soldering gun was another chinese joke so I smashed it
and bought a Weller, known name brand in soldering guns, I bought the
best one (make that the most expensive one) Home Defect's competion had
to offer. Yup it B-LOWES, and one would think that after 20 minutes of
pulling the trigger it should melt solder, that little curl of solder
supplied with the gun, it didn't even burn my finger when I touched it.
It was a bit warm, but it's also 75* out tonight so it was probably room
temperature.
