Howdy all,

Since I've got the new house, but I won't be living there for a while, it's
given my mind time to wander. And those that know me, know that is a very
bad thing.<grin>

I'm planning once again to paint the car myself. I was planning to get it
done at a shop when I lived in California, since I don't think my apartment
complex would have appreciated my artistic efforts too much. My new place
will have plenty of space, so that's why I'm thinking of doing it myself.

What have people done in regards to paint booths? It seems after doing
some Googling, that the PVC pipe shrouded by 8 or 10 mil plastic sheeting is
a good way to go for a one time paint job, and has the ability to be stored
for future use. I was thinking of taking this design just a step further,
and trying to rig a way to make it a downdraft system. I've never a
real-life downdraft booth up close, so I'm wondering what the difference is,
besides having the fans suck air through the floor, under the car. If
that's the case, wouldn't some sort of simple flooring, 2X6s with plywood,
then metal put over the plywood seem to work? Then cutouts could be made
for the fans to be mounted in the floor. Or is there more to downdraft
booths than I'm thinking?

What are folks thoughts on this, and how have others painted their cars at
home? Going past the paint area issue, what tools do people recommend (ie
paint guns)? I'm planning on splurging to get a fresh air system, as I've
seen it put here before "NOS lungs are unobtainium". What paint systems do
people prefer and/or recommend? I painted my dad's Sprite with DuPont's
Cronar about 10 years ago, but I can't seem to find any mention of it on
DuPont's site anymore.

I've still got a few more months until this starts, so more time for my
over-active mind to come up with more wild-hair ideas.

Looking forward to hearing input!
